Foi com assombro que me lembrei hoje do livro de Erica Jong Fear of Flying [Medo de Voar — nos dias de hoje publicado no Brasil em formato bolso]. NPR [National Public Radio] nos Estados Unidos comemorou os quarenta anos da publicação desse livro que se tornou, quase imediatamente após sua publicação, um marco no movimento pela igualdade de direitos das mulheres. Minha leitura desse romance, onde a heroína se dá ao direito de querer e gostar de ter uma vida sexual ativa, foi um tempinho depois da publicação. Eu estava na faculdade, nos Estados Unidos, quando o li e mesmo assim foi um livro de grande impacto. Não era, nem pretendia ser, uma obra de grande valor literário. Mas foi marcante. Na época, eu morava em Baltimore e viajava todos os dias, ida e volta, de trem para College Park, mais ou menos uma hora de viagem entre as cidades, para estudar na Universidade de Maryland. Lembro-me de ler este livro nessas longas viagens de trem; e de que, encabulada com o realismo das cenas retratadas, encapei o volume com papel de presente, para não alardear o que eu lia. A mente era pudica, mesmo que eu já fosse casada. Na época eu era membro da NOW (National Organization for Women], totalmente engajada, defendendo, o que considerava ser uma das maiores injustiças no mundo, um dos direitos femininos mais básicos, ainda não completamente satisfeito: a igualdade de salários entre os que fazem o mesmo trabalho. Nunca voltei a ler Medo de voar. Já sugeri sua leitura a algumas amigas. Tenho certeza de que se o relesse hoje perderia sua mágica, porque para tudo há o momento certo e revisitar o passado em geral desaponta. Mas não podia deixar de marcar essa passagem assim como a própria NPR não pode deixar de fazê-lo. É o retrato de uma época, de uma preocupação. Um momento da história cultural.

There is a clear statement on my blog that all images and words are copyright to me. If you wish to use them for any purpose you may not do so without my permission. You did not ask me if you could use my work for this purpose, so please take it down. Alternatively, if you wish to keep using the image you can pay me for the right to do so. I charge a flat fee for this kind of use of an existing image.
Please understand that it isn’t okay to simply use an artists work – we are protected by the law of copyright. But more than that, there is a moral issue too about using something that simply isn’t yours to use.
Dear Birdie, I understand very well copyrights issues. And I am sorry you feel this way. I did put a link direct to your blog/shop, immediately below the indication of you name and of the work. In fact that is considered free publicity, from someone who is not making one cent of profit from your image…. As a matter of fact chances are you would have never found out if I used your image had I not put a link back to your page. My blog has an average of 7000 visitors a day who are interested in the fine arts and in literature, and it is good exposure to your material. But I will remove your image immediately.
